Tray Sealer Qualification: OQ vs PQ for Sterile-Barrier Packaging

Tray sealer qualification should address both the proposed operating window and repeated performance under defined production conditions. OQ and PQ answer these different questions. Begin with the actual tray, lid material, equipment and intended sealing configuration; results from a different combination need a justified applicability assessment.

Use OQ to challenge the proposed window

Identify sealing variables and their proposed limits, relevant prerequisites and the tests used to judge the package. Plan challenges that examine the limits and important combinations, with acceptance criteria defined in advance. Record the settings actually used and assess unexpected results before selecting the operating window.

Use PQ to examine repeatable production performance

Plan runs using defined production conditions, materials and relevant sources of variation. Preserve within-run and between-run information rather than report only one combined result. Link test specimens to the run and configuration, assess deviations and define routine controls consistent with the qualified conditions.

Practical checklist

  • Identify tray, lid and equipment configurations.

  • Confirm installation and measurement prerequisites.

  • Approve OQ challenges and package tests.

  • Define PQ runs and relevant variation.

  • Review results and establish operating controls.

Example

A tray seal may meet criteria at a nominal setting yet perform differently at a proposed process limit. OQ explores that boundary; PQ examines whether the selected production conditions yield repeatable performance.

Common mistakes

Avoid extrapolating to new materials or tooling without a change assessment. A sealer display setting is not itself proof of package performance; interpret it alongside the qualified process and test evidence.

Choose the relevant A.P. Lyon documents

Use the tray OQ protocol to plan challenges at the proposed sealing-window limits.

Use the tray PQ protocol to assess repeatable sealing under defined production conditions.

Choose the tray qualification bundle when both OQ and PQ documentation are needed together.

Review the product page, document previews and any content list before choosing. Adapt the selected documents to your device, processes and applicable requirements; the organization must generate and review its own implementation evidence.
