Equipment IQ, Calibration and Preventive Maintenance

Installation qualification, calibration and preventive maintenance provide different evidence about equipment. IQ establishes that installation requirements have been addressed. Calibration examines measurement performance. Maintenance manages servicing and condition over time. A dependable equipment program connects all three with the equipment’s intended use.

Establish the installation baseline

Identify the equipment, location, utilities, manufacturer information and intended application. Check prerequisites such as installation conditions, documentation and relevant measurement instruments before moving to operational studies. Record discrepancies and their resolution so later qualification work rests on a clear baseline.

Maintain measurement confidence and operating condition

Identify which measurements affect product or process decisions and define calibration requirements accordingly. Keep status visible and evaluate the possible impact of an out-of-tolerance result. Maintenance should address the equipment’s servicing needs, with records of work and checks before return to use. A repair or relocation may trigger an assessment of qualification or calibration needs.

Practical checklist

  • Identify equipment and intended use.

  • Document installation and utility checks.

  • Define measurement and calibration requirements.

  • Set maintenance tasks and intervals.

  • Assess changes and out-of-tolerance findings.

Example

A sealing machine can be well maintained while its temperature indication is inaccurate. Conversely, a calibrated sensor cannot compensate for a worn mechanism. Reviewing maintenance and calibration together helps separate these problems.

Common mistakes

Avoid treating a calibration sticker as the entire calibration record or assuming a successful IQ proves routine process performance. Keep the underlying results, acceptance decisions and ongoing controls accessible.

Choose the relevant A.P. Lyon documents

Use IQ documentation for new, relocated or modified equipment installation and prerequisite checks.

Use the calibration system procedure for equipment registration, calibration requirements, status and result assessment.

Use preventive maintenance for routine servicing, repairs, inspections and adjustments.

Review the product page, document previews and any content list before choosing. Adapt the selected documents to your device, processes and applicable requirements; the organization must generate and review its own implementation evidence.
