Medical Device Technology Transfer Between Manufacturing Facilities

Moving a medical device, equipment or manufacturing process to another facility is a coordinated change. The receiving site needs more than copied work instructions: it needs the capability, materials, trained personnel and evidence to perform the transferred work. Plan the transfer around those interfaces and the release decisions they support.

Define the transfer baseline and differences

Identify the approved product configurations, specifications, equipment, process parameters, suppliers and records. Compare the sending and receiving facilities for utilities, environment, personnel, test methods and operational controls. Use the differences to determine what evidence and change assessment are needed before the new site begins routine work.

Use milestones with clear readiness decisions

Assign owners for document transfer, equipment work, training, supplier readiness and qualification or validation activities. Define acceptance evidence and unresolved-issue handling at each milestone. Preserve the link between study results and the configuration actually transferred. Plan continuity, inventory identification and the point at which manufacturing and release responsibility changes.

Practical checklist

  • Identify transferred scope and approved baseline.

  • Assess site and process differences.

  • Assign phased deliverables and readiness criteria.

  • Complete evidence, training and document handover.

  • Record release decisions and post-transfer review.

Example

Two facilities may use the same equipment model but different utilities, fixtures or environmental conditions. The transfer assessment should consider the effect of those differences rather than assume the original qualification automatically applies.

Common mistakes

Avoid setting the first production date as the only transfer milestone. Track readiness by evidence and responsible decisions so schedule pressure does not conceal incomplete prerequisites.

Choose the relevant A.P. Lyon documents

Use the technology-transfer procedure to organize the phased transfer of products, equipment and manufacturing processes between facilities.

Review the product page, document previews and any content list before choosing. Adapt the selected documents to your device, processes and applicable requirements; the organization must generate and review its own implementation evidence.
