Medical Device Shelf Life and Accelerated Aging: Define the Claim First

A shelf-life claim can involve device performance, packaging integrity and other attributes that change with time. Accelerated aging of a sterile-barrier package answers a narrower question than the stability of the entire device. Define the claim and the evidence needed for each relevant attribute before selecting aging conditions.

Separate the attributes being supported

Identify the device and package configurations, claimed storage conditions and characteristics that may degrade. Define evaluations after aging and the acceptance criteria for each attribute. Consider the effects of prior sterilization, distribution conditioning and other relevant exposures in the study rationale.

Justify the accelerated model and real-time evidence

Record assumptions, temperatures and exposure-time calculations for the accelerated study. Assess whether the model is appropriate to the materials and failure mechanisms being considered. Plan concurrent real-time work and explain how its results will be reviewed. Keep study samples traceable to configuration and exposure history so unexpected findings can be investigated.

Practical checklist

  • Define the proposed shelf-life and storage claim.

  • Identify device and packaging attributes.

  • Justify study models and conditions.

  • Approve post-aging methods and criteria.

  • Plan review of real-time results.

Example

A package can retain acceptable seal properties while a device component loses performance during storage. Package-aging results should therefore be interpreted within the stated package scope, with separate evidence for device attributes where needed.

Common mistakes

Avoid choosing a high aging temperature solely to shorten the schedule. The assumptions and applicability need justification; accelerated results do not automatically answer every stability question.

Choose the relevant A.P. Lyon documents

Use the accelerated-aging protocol for sterile-barrier packaging assumptions, exposures, post-aging evaluations and parallel real-time planning.

Use the product stability and shelf-life procedure to organize the broader evidence supporting the device’s shelf-life claim.

Review the product page, document previews and any content list before choosing. Adapt the selected documents to your device, processes and applicable requirements; the organization must generate and review its own implementation evidence.
