Medical Device Labeling, UDI and CE Marking: Keep Claims Aligned

Labels and instructions communicate device identity, intended use and important information to users. UDI and registration records support identification, while CE marking involves a broader conformity-assessment framework. These activities intersect, but label approval alone does not establish that all market-access obligations have been met.

Review the complete labeling set

Identify unit, box and shipper labels, instructions for use and the versions relevant to each market. Check consistency with approved claims, device configurations and supporting evidence. A shelf-life statement should align with the stability evidence, and changes in intended use or warnings should be assessed with the relevant technical and regulatory functions.

Connect identifiers and market records

Define responsibilities for identifier assignment, data entry, review and change management. Compare device identity and configuration across labels and database records. For EU activities, assess classification, technical documentation and the applicable conformity route separately from the mechanics of label artwork approval.

Practical checklist

  • Identify configurations, languages and markets.

  • Review labels and IFU against approved claims.

  • Check shelf-life and other evidence-dependent statements.

  • Align identifiers with database records.

  • Assess changes for labeling and market-access impacts.

Example

A packaging revision may require an artwork change without changing the device’s intended use. Another revision may introduce a new claim. The review should distinguish those effects and route the second change through the appropriate evidence and regulatory assessment.

Common mistakes

Avoid assuming the UDI or CE symbol is the whole compliance task. Verify the applicable duties and current requirements for the device and market before approving labels or registration changes.

Choose the relevant A.P. Lyon documents

Use label review and approval for label levels, IFU checks, approvals and controlled changes.

Use UDI documentation for identifier assignment, labeling and associated database records.

Use CE-marking documentation to organize classification, technical evidence and conformity-assessment activities.

Compare the labeling bundle for connected label, UDI, shelf-life and CE-marking procedures.

Review the product page, document previews and any content list before choosing. Adapt the selected documents to your device, processes and applicable requirements; the organization must generate and review its own implementation evidence.
