Clinical Evaluation Reports: Turning Medical Device Evidence into Conclusions
A clinical evaluation report explains what the available clinical evidence means for a defined device and its claims. It should make the reasoning traceable from the device scope through evidence selection and appraisal to conclusions and remaining gaps. Copying references into a report is not the same as evaluating them.
Define the question and evidence boundaries
Identify the device configuration, intended purpose, population and claims being evaluated. Establish a plan for identifying and assessing relevant evidence. Record search methods and selection decisions so another reviewer can understand what was included and excluded. Assess how closely the evidence applies to the actual device and use conditions.
Show both support and uncertainty
Separate the evidence summary from the analysis. Explain strengths, limitations, inconsistent results and remaining questions. Relate findings to risk-management conclusions and the post-market activities intended to address uncertainty. When new evidence or a device change arises, assess which parts of the evaluation and conclusions need updating.
Practical checklist
Define device, intended use and claims.
Plan evidence identification and appraisal.
Keep selection decisions traceable.
Explain limitations and evidence gaps.
Connect conclusions with risk management and follow-up.
Example
A study involving a related device may provide useful context but differ in patient population or important design features. Record those differences and their effect on applicability rather than present the study as direct support without explanation.
Common mistakes
Avoid conclusions that simply restate the desired claim. The report should show how the evidence supports the conclusion and what uncertainty remains; a document structure cannot supply missing device-specific evidence.
Choose the relevant A.P. Lyon documents
Use the clinical evaluation procedure and report structure to organize planning, evidence appraisal, analysis and reporting.
Compare the clinical evaluation bundle when coordinated clinical, PMCF, surveillance and investigation documentation is needed.
Review the product page, document previews and any content list before choosing. Adapt the selected documents to your device, processes and applicable requirements; the organization must generate and review its own implementation evidence.
